Reservations & Payment
- Major credit only (VISA, MasterCard, Discover, American Express).
- You must bring the physical credit card used for the reservation on the day of rental.
- A signed rental agreement and liability waiver is required at the time of rental for pontoons, fishing boats, and wave runners.
Damage Deposit & Liability
- Customers are responsible for any damage or loss to rental equipment.
- A $500 damage deposit is preauthorized on your credit or debit card at check-in for wave runner rentals.
- No cash or checks accepted for the damage deposit.
Cancellation Policy
- No cancellations allowed within 5 days of your scheduled rental date.
- Weather-related cancellations (rain or winds over 30 mph) are allowed on the day of the rental only. Metro Lakes Marina will contact you if weather requires cancellation.
- Cancellations within the 5-day window will forfeit their reservation deposit (25% of the total). If no deposit was made, then a fee of 25% of the total will be charged to the card on file.
- Failure to cancel or show up for your rental will result in the full rental fee being charged.
Late Return Policy
- A late fee of $50 will be charged for every 15 minutes past your scheduled return time.
Pet Policy
- Pets under 60 lbs are allowed for a $45.00 fee.
Boating Rules
- No glass containers or kegs allowed on board. Alcohol is permitted in non-glass containers only. Please assign a designated driver.
- No glitter allowed.
- No grills of any kind are permitted on rental boats.
- No skiing, tubing, or towing of any kind behind rental boats.
- Operate vessels defensively at all times. Avoid aggressive maneuvers, weaving through traffic, or operating recklessly. Always maintain awareness of surroundings and avoid swimming areas and congested zones.
- Passengers must remain seated while the vessel is in motion and stay clear of the bow, gunwales, stern, and swim platform while underway.
- When anchoring, always anchor from the bow (front) in a visible location that does not obstruct other boaters.
Boating Rules & Safety Summary
Speed Limits
- 5 mph speed limit within:
- 300 feet of shore
- 150 feet of swimmers, structures, or anchored boats
- In marked slow zones
- General limits:
- 40 mph (daytime), 20 mph (nighttime)
- Always maintain a safe distance from other boats, swimmers, docks, and objects. Greater speeds require greater stopping distance and space.
- Boats do not have brakes — stopping the engine will not immediately stop the vessel. Operate at safe speeds for conditions.
Life Jackets & Flotation Devices
- One U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket per person
- Boats 16 feet or longer must also carry a throwable flotation device
- Children under 10 must wear a life jacket at all times
- Anyone entering the water must ensure the engine is fully off, the propeller has stopped, and the operator confirms it is safe before entry
Boating Under the Influence (BUI)
- No operation of any boat or watercraft while under the influence alcohol, drugs, or impairing substances
- Operation under the influence of controlled or illegal substances is also prohibited
- Underage drinking is strictly enforced
- Boat operators and owners may be held legally responsible
Unsafe Riding
- Illegal to sit or ride on the gunwales, bow, transom, or decking while the boat is underway, unless the area is equipped with proper railings
Navigational Lights (Required Sunset to Sunrise)
- Red light on the port (left) side
- Green light on the starboard (right) side
- White light visible 360 degrees around the vessel
Wakes
- Your wake must not endanger, harass, or interfere with other people or property
Channels & Public Passageways
Do not:
- Block or interfere with boat traffic
- Moor in a way that creates a hazard
- Swim, tow, jump from bridges, or overtake in narrow channels
Buoys & Navigation
Understand and follow all buoy markings and waterway signs for safe navigation
Navigation right-of-way rules apply:
- Yield to vessels on your right (starboard) when crossing paths
- When meeting head-on, both vessels steer right
- Overtake other vessels on the left (port side) when safe
- Powerboats must yield to sailboats
Operator Safety Requirements
- The engine shut-off lanyard (kill switch) must be attached to the operator at all times when operating the vessel.
- Operators should confirm all passengers are onboard and the area is clear before starting the engine.
- Sound five short horn blasts to signal danger or request assistance.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
- Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas produced by boat engines and can accumulate near the stern and swim platform. Avoid lingering near exhaust areas while the engine is running. Never sit or play near engine exhaust zones.
Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski) Safety
- A life jacket must be worn at all times while operating or riding a personal watercraft.
- The engine cut-off lanyard must be attached to the operator.
- Keep clear of the jet nozzle while the engine is running. Jet thrust can cause serious internal injuries. Never apply throttle if someone is behind the watercraft.
- Keep hair, loose clothing, straps, and debris away from the intake grate — the jet drive has strong suction.
- Horseplay, wake jumping, spraying others, or reckless operation is prohibited.
- Stopping the engine will not immediately stop forward motion, and steering control is reduced without throttle.
- If a jet ski capsizes, follow the rollover direction indicated on the decal before restarting.
Minnesota DNR Rules and Regulations
We want to make you aware of a new Minnesota DNR regulation that may impact your reservation. Please familiarize yourself with it to ensure you are compliant!
Information regarding the 180 day rental permit and the watercraft operators permit can be found on the Minnesota DNR website.
- If you are not compliant with the new rule, you are assuming full responsibility for any legal consequences associated with operating without a permit.
- Rentals will still be as scheduled, but all renters are expected to comply with current state boating regulations.
For more information please visit the Minnesota DNR website. To avoid any issues, we highly recommend completing the permit course ahead of time.
